What is the difference between round and contoured implants? Which is best?

Breast implants come in two general types: round and contoured or anatomic implants.
Round implants are more spherical in shape and may have either smooth walled or textured surfaces. Contoured or anatomic implants have a tear drop shape. In order to maintain this shape a textured surface must be employed. It was originally felt that anatomic implants would give a more natural slope
in the upper breast and a better overall shape. Round implants, however, because of the fluid or filler shift to the lower pole of the implant also become tear drop shaped in the upright position. Therefore, there is no significant advantage in breast shape with the contoured implant. Using round implants also avoids the disadvantages of contoured implants which include shape distortions if there is any post operative rotation of the device, as well as a potentially higher incidence of implant rupture because of traction on the textured surface.
