How long do breast implants last?

Breast implants are very durable and in general will not require replacement for many years. In the case of saline implants, deflation would be an indication for replacement. This would present itself as a gradual decrease in breast size and a softening of the feel of the breast. The rate of implant deflation is approximately 1% per year. Deflation is harmless, but will require reoperation to replace the implant. In the case of silicone gel implants a rupture in the implant shell may not necessarily be obvious. The body naturally creates a scar tissue capsule around the implant and when disruption in the shell occurs the silicone gel, which is quite thick and cohesive, is usually contained by the capsule. In this situation a capsular contracture may occur, manifested by increased firmness in the breast. A change in breast shape may also occur. This would necessitate implant replacement. There is no evidence that rupture of silicone breast implants represents a health risk.
