Should I be concerned that the breast implants will rupture?
Although breast implants are quite durable, over time implant rupture is always a possibility due to long term wear and tear. Depending on the type of implant this may manifest in several ways. In the case of saline implants a rupture would result in a gradual reduction in breast size and a general softening of the breast. This does not represent a health risk but would require replacement of the implant. In the case of silicone gel implants a rupture may present in several ways. One would be the development of a tight or calcified implant capsule which would present as a firmer or harder feel to the breast. Another presentation would be a shape change of the breast. Although requiring reoperation for replacement, there is no scientific evidence that silicone implant rupture produces any health risk.
