What type of scarring is expected after breast reduction surgery?
The scars resulting from breast reduction surgery depend on the method performed. Two general techniques are most frequently performed: the vertical ,superior pedicle technique, and the inferior pedicle, Wise pattern technique.
The vertical technique is used mostly in smaller and more moderate size reductions. The resulting scar is characterized by a lolly pop shape extending around the areola with a vertical component extending from the bottom of the areola to the fold at the bottom of the breast(inframammary fold). A limited horizontal component may also be necessary in the fold region.
The inferior pedicle, Wize pattern technique is employed in larger breast reductions and in those requiring larger amounts of skin excision. The resulting scar has an anchor configuration, extending around the areolar with a vertical central component and a much longer horizontal component in the lower breast fold region.
The quality of the scar in any given patient is dependent on their own individual healing process and varies from patient to patient. In most cases the scars are very acceptable and don’t require any revisional procedures.
